Since 1970, when the Frank Pietersen Music Centre (FPMC) was founded, we continue to reach out to learners of the Cape Winelands Education District, and adult students of the Boland, creating opportunities through musical creativity, development and enjoyment.

The late Frank Pietersen, then Inspector of Music in the former Department of Coloured Affairs, founded the FPMC as the Paarl Schools Music Centre in March 1970. He had the inclusive vision of creating a Youth Orchestra for the whole community of Paarl. Groups of volunteer teachers gave tuition in recorder and Orff instruments at the Athlone Teachers' College, in Paarl, becoming the first staff of the Centre. After flourishing for 10 years the Centre went into recess in 1988, due to lack of support, financial constraints and lack of accommodation.

The humblest of beginnings...

On February 12, 1989, Frank Pietersen passed away. Driven by a new vision, one of his sons, Vaughan Pietersen, restarted the Centre, beginning with only eight (8) learners in his lounge. In 1990, the Centre started expanding and eight (8) learners grew to thirty-eight (38), with dedicated, voluntary teachers who supported this effort, breathing new life into the Centre.

In October 1991, the name of the Paarl Schools Music Centre was changed to the Frank Pietersen Music Centre, whilst still being housed in the garage of the late Frank Pietersen. In this same year, the Centre achieved Gold awards at the Roodepoort International Eisteddfod, and again in 1993.

In 1992, the Department of Arts and Culture made funds available to purchase woodwind, brass and string instruments, and tuition commenced in orchestral instruments. In the following year, 1993, the Athlone Teachers' College closed down and in 1994 the Centre moved into the building, which it is still occupying today. On 01 April 1994 the Centre became a state institution with Vaughan Pietersen as principal.

Often under difficult circumstances, the Centre has persisted in its efforts to make music education affordable and accessible to all socio-economic groups of the community. Since 1994, until today, the Centre has grown immensely, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2020. Over these years, new posts have been allocated, more instruments purchased and many new departments have been established.

The Centre has also created opportunities and formed relations with the various institutions in Paarl, whom we serve, as well as with international conductors and musicians. Our learners have travelled abroad to participate in exchange projects and continue to actively excel in external exams, eisteddfods, and competitions, all the while being enriched and refining their talents, and at the same time, inspiring communities.
